Trainers... Huddle Up!
Alright…fellow fitness professionals gather 'round (I mean really everyone should hear this) I am going to give away my biggest secrets and how I’ve gotten so many referrals and raving fans over the past year. That being said, let me remind you about the massive opportunity you have with your clients to impact their entire freakin' life. You aren’t working at the post office okay?! We are in a serious business. I know you may be making less than $12/hour especially at the big chain gyms, but if this is your calling in life then step it up and act as if you already have your own business and build a reputation so you can branch off on your own later. If all you do is recommended exercises and count their reps...like...um...you know that your clients spend 97% of their week without you right? How are you going to help them make real lasting change, ya feel me?
if you do take your job seriously
then you probably already do 3 things:
- Plan your sessions in advance, not on the fly. You already know how much more powerful a session could be if you spent just a few minutes reviewing your clients goals and posture, finding ways to work out a muscle that’s new or fun or challenging, being prepared for that conversation if they slipped up since they last saw you and deciding what you are going to teach them next about how to be self-sufficient after you stop training them.
- Walk the walk...If you are out of shape, you have no business coaching or even just selling personal training to anyone…you just don’t understand what it truly takes to maintain a lifestyle of fitness. There is more than technical knowledge involved; forming exercise habits is an emotional and psychological battle that you are yourself losing, so no one cares about how much experience you have if you are burnt out. It would be like going to see the doctor and an obese doctor walks in lol!
- You foster self-sufficiency in your clients. This is the hardest one because most trainers want to keep clients longer to make more money. But after about 3 months they should have the option to plan and execute and enjoy training on their own based on what you’ve taught them. If you want to change a lot of lives that is what you should do.
To wrap up, put in the extra time before sessions, lead by example, teach clients how to be independent.
